What is a careful account of the Battle of Haldighati?

Quick answer

Haldighati was fought because Pratap would not accept Mughal suzerainty. Mughal chronicles record a Mughal success. Mewar did not submit while Pratap lived. 18 June 1576 is the date used in standard accounts.

Detailed answer

Maharana Pratap of Mewar faced a Mughal force whose field commander was Man Singh I of Amber. Haldighati was fought because Pratap would not accept Mughal suzerainty. Mughal chronicles record a Mughal success. Mewar did not submit while Pratap lived.

The pass is in the Aravalli, in what is now Rajsamand district, between the Kumbhalgarh hills and the Udaipur country. Pratap died in 1597 at Chavand. His son Amar Singh I reached a settlement with Jahangir in 1615.

Important information

  • Memorise 1576 for the battle and 1597 for Pratap’s death. Do not move the battle to Chittorgarh.

Tips
