History

Which dates are safe to memorise for the 1303 siege of Chittorgarh?

Quick answer

1303, in the reign of Alauddin Khalji of Delhi. Say 1303 for Khalji, and say that Padmavat is literature. Do not quote the poem as an eyewitness.

Detailed answer

1303, in the reign of Alauddin Khalji of Delhi.

Say 1303 for Khalji, and say that Padmavat is literature. Do not quote the poem as an eyewitness.

The sack of Chittor in 1303 is a historical event. Later writing describes jauhar during the great sieges. Those descriptions are not all of the same age, and they are not a film script. Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s Padmavat is a sixteenth-century poem, not the minutes of 1303. Rani Padmini as a documented person of 1303 is not something this library will state as settled fact.

Important information

  • Say 1303 for Khalji, and say that Padmavat is literature. Do not quote the poem as an eyewitness.
