What should visitors know about Ajmer Sharif?

Quick answer

The dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer is one of the most important Sufi shrines in South Asia. Visitors are expected to dress modestly and follow the shrine’s own rules.

Detailed answer

Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, often called Gharib Nawaz, established the Chishti presence in Ajmer in the medieval period. The Urs, the death anniversary observance, draws very large crowds on dates that move with the lunar calendar. Do not visit on an assumption about crowd size; check for the year.

It is a sacred place first. Photography, phones and clothing are governed by the dargah. Pushkar is nearby but it is a different kind of visit.

Tips

  • Cover your head if asked.
  • Keep the visit shorter and quieter than a fort tour.
