What is bandhani?

Quick answer

Bandhani, also called bandhej, is tie-dye. Tiny knots are tied on cloth before it is dyed so they resist the colour and leave a field of dots. Jaipur and Jodhpur are major centres, and the craft is worn as well as sold.

Detailed answer

Leheriya is a related resist technique of wave or stripe patterns, associated with the monsoon and with Jaipur turbans. It is not the same stitch as a dotted bandhani odhni, though shops sometimes use the words loosely.

A fine bandhani has many small, even ties. Very cheap ‘bandhani’ is often printed dots. Ask to see the back of the cloth: real ties leave a gathered texture.
