Traditions

Traditional dresses of Rajasthan

Quick answer

A widely worn festive ensemble for women is a ghagra or lehenga, a choli, and an odhni. Men’s ceremonial dress includes a dhoti or churidar, a kurta, and a turban whose style marks region and occasion. Everyday city clothes are ordinary modern clothes.

Detailed answer

‘The’ Rajasthani dress does not exist. Marwar, Mewar, Shekhawati and the desert edge tie turbans differently and print cloth differently. Bandhani, leheriya and block print are techniques you can see in what people wear at weddings and fairs.

Visitors are not required to wear traditional dress. At shrines, covered shoulders and legs matter more than costume. If you buy a poshak, ask what is stitched for a photograph and what is actually worn, and expect a wedding set to cost more than a souvenir set.

Tips

  • Learn the name of the print you like: bandhani, leheriya, bagru, sanganeri, kota doria. The words stop you buying a screen print described as a craft.
