Tourism

What is Rajasthan famous for?

Quick answer

Rajasthan is famous for its hill and desert forts, the Thar, palace cities such as Jaipur and Udaipur, strong textile and jewellery crafts, a distinct cuisine, and a calendar of fairs.

Detailed answer

The image most people carry is accurate as far as it goes: sandstone forts, camel country in the west, lakes in Udaipur, and a capital planned in the 18th century. Under that are working crafts — block print, bandhani, Kota Doria, blue pottery — and a food culture built for dry country and celebration.

It is also India’s largest state by area, with a real rural economy: mustard, bajra, pulses, marble, mining and, in the west, very large solar plants. Tourism is important. It is not the whole state.

Famous does not mean uniform. Shekhawati’s painted havelis, Bikaner’s lanes, the Jain temples at Ranakpur and Mount Abu, and the wetlands at Bharatpur are different visits from a dune dinner.

Important information

  • Area is widely given as about 342,239 square kilometres. Confirm with the Survey of India if you need the figure for an exam or a legal paper.

Tips

  • Pick the fame you actually want. A fort trip and a handicraft trip are both ‘Rajasthan’ and they are not the same week.
