Fairs and festivals

What are the famous festivals of Rajasthan?

Quick answer

Widely known festivals include Gangaur, Teej, the Pushkar camel fair, the Jaisalmer Desert Festival, and the Urs at Ajmer, alongside Diwali, Holi and Navratri as they are kept locally. Most of the famous ones move with the lunar calendar.

Detailed answer

Gangaur, after Holi, celebrates Shiva and Parvati and is strongly associated with women, with processions in Jaipur and Udaipur among other places. Teej comes in the monsoon month of Shravan and is when ghewar is eaten. Neither has a fixed Gregorian date.

Pushkar’s camel fair is around Kartik Purnima. The Desert Festival in Jaisalmer is a state cultural festival usually placed in winter; the year decides the week. Treat any month named in a blog as a hint until the tourism calendar confirms it.

Fairs such as Nagaur and Kolayat are as important locally as the ones on postcards. If your trip depends on a festival, verify the year before you book flights.

Tips

  • Book rooms early for Pushkar week and for Desert Festival week.
  • Processions are crowded. Keep a meeting point if you are with family.
