How many days are enough for Jaipur?

Quick answer

Two nights is a comfortable first visit: one day for the old city and Jantar Mantar, and one for Amber. A single day is only enough for a hurried sample.

Detailed answer

Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II. The palace quarter, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal sit in and around the old city grid. Amber Fort is not in that grid. It is a separate drive or a short ride to the edge of the hills, and it deserves an unhurried morning.

With one night you can see either the old city or Amber properly, not both at a human pace. With three nights you can add a stepwell at Abhaneri only if you accept a long day, or keep the third day for food, textiles at Sanganer or Bagru, and walking the bazaars.

Opening hours and ticket prices change. Check the Archaeological Survey of India or the monument’s own notice for the day you go. Monday closures have applied to some Jaipur monuments in the past; confirm rather than assuming.

Important information

  • Do not plan Amber and a same-evening train to Jodhpur if the train is early.
  • The pink façades of the old city are a later civic painting, popularly linked to the 1876 visit of the Prince of Wales. The city itself is older.

Tips

  • Start Amber when it opens if you dislike crowds.
  • Carry water. Even December walks are dry.

Advantages

  • Two nights let you eat a proper Jaipur evening: kachori, a thali, or sweets, instead of sightseeing until dark.

Limitations

  • One day looks efficient on a map and feels rushed on the ground.
