Jaisalmer

What is special about Jaisalmer?

Quick answer

Jaisalmer is a desert city whose fort, often called Sonar Quila or the Golden Fort, is still lived in. It is part of the UNESCO Hill Forts of Rajasthan. The dunes are outside the town, not inside the fort.

Detailed answer

The fort is golden because of the local stone in the late-day light. Because people still live and trade inside it, water use and heavy construction have been conservation issues for years. Walk it as a neighbourhood, not only as a viewpoint. Follow any request not to climb fragile bits of havelis.

Patwon ki Haveli and other merchant houses explain why Jaisalmer was rich: it taxed caravan trade. The Sam dunes are a separate drive. A ‘safari’ can mean a quiet sunset or a loud camp. Ask what you are paying for before you go.

Give Jaisalmer two nights if it is the point of the trip. One night usually means arriving tired and leaving before you have seen the fort in a good light.

Tips

  • Carry cash for smaller shops inside the fort.
  • Winter dawn at the dunes is cold. Summer midday is dangerous to treat casually.
