Jodhpur

What is Jodhpur known for?

Quick answer

Jodhpur, the old capital of Marwar, is known for Mehrangarh Fort above a blue-washed old town, for a desert-edge climate, and for food such as mirchi vada and makhaniya lassi.

Detailed answer

Rao Jodha founded the city in 1459 and began the fort that became Mehrangarh. The old town below the fort is the part visitors call the blue city. Not every house is blue, and not every blue lane is a backdrop: people live there.

Jaswant Thada, a white marble memorial, sits nearby and is a shorter stop. The old clock-tower market is the food stop. Mandore, to the north, has older royal cenotaphs if you have a second day.

One full day covers Mehrangarh and the old town at a decent pace. A second day is for Osian, a village tour, or simply not rushing the fort.
