A slow look at Rajasthan

Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II, below the older palace at Amber.

Forts, palaces and heritage

Hill forts, palaces and what the UNESCO list does and does not include.

The Hill Forts of Rajasthan are one UNESCO site from 2013, with six components: Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Ranthambore, Gagron, Amber and Jaisalmer. Mehrangarh at Jodhpur is famous and not on that list. Junagarh at Bikaner is not on it either. Beauty and the inscription are different sentences. Say both.

Chittorgarh is the great Mewar ridge, with the sieges of 1303, 1535 and 1568 in the textbooks. Kumbhalgarh is the fifteenth-century fort associated with Rana Kumbha and a very long rampart. Ranthambore’s fort is the heritage component. The tiger reserve is a separate permit. Gagron, near Jhalawar, sits at a meeting of waters and is the component most short trips skip. Amber is the palace in the hills above Jaipur, not the old-city bazaar. Jaisalmer is lived in.

Walk a fort in the cool hours. A same-day arrival after a long drive wastes the place. Tickets and cameras follow the board at the gate, often the Archaeological Survey of India, sometimes a palace trust. A hotel “fort pass” may be a taxi plan. This site stores the list. It does not store a live price.
