A slow look at Rajasthan

Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II, below the older palace at Amber.

History

Kingdoms, forts and the making of the modern state.

The dates that stay still are worth learning cleanly. Jaisalmer, 1156, Rawal Jaisal. Jodhpur, 1459, Rao Jodha. Udaipur, 1559, Maharana Udai Singh II, in the years after the pressure on Chittor. Jaipur, 1727, Sawai Jai Singh II, with the court moving down from Amber. Haldighati, 1576, Maharana Pratap and the Mughal force led by Man Singh of Amber. Jantar Mantar in Jaipur, UNESCO 2010. Hill forts, UNESCO 2013.

Chittorgarh’s textbook sieges are 1303, associated with Alauddin Khalji, 1535 with Bahadur Shah of Gujarat, and 1568 with Akbar. Later accounts describe jauhar in the great sieges. Those accounts are not a film, and they are not all of equal age. Jayasi’s Padmavat is a sixteenth-century poem. It is literature. It is not the minutes of 1303. Say that clearly. The fort is still a vast ridge of gates and reservoirs without the legend.

The modern state was assembled in stages. The Rajasthan Foundation’s account begins with the Matsya Union on 17 March 1948, then the Rajasthan Union on 25 March 1948, then Udaipur, then Greater Rajasthan on 30 March 1949, which is Rajasthan Day, when Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Jaisalmer came in and Jaipur became the capital. Matsya merged on 15 May 1949. The States Reorganisation of 1956 brought Ajmer, Abu Road and Sunel in, and Sironj left. If a question says “when was Rajasthan formed?”, read whether it means 1949 or 1956.

Mehrangarh is a great fort and not one of the six UNESCO hill-fort components. Those are Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Ranthambore, Gagron, Amber and Jaisalmer. Amber is not the same visit as Jaipur’s old city. Ranthambore’s fort is not the same ticket as a tiger safari. Keep those pairs apart and the history paper gets quieter.
