A slow look at Rajasthan

Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II, below the older palace at Amber.

Answers come from a sourced library stored with this site. It is not a live government notice, and it will not invent an answer it does not have.

Wildlife and nature

Tiger reserves, the Bharatpur wetland and desert habitat.

Keoladeo at Bharatpur is a wetland and a UNESCO site from 1985. It is for birds. It is not a tiger reserve. You move on the paths, not in a canter. Ranthambore, by Sawai Madhopur, and Sariska, in Alwar, are the tiger reserves most visitors can name. A safari can end with no cat. That is a forest visit, not a failed ticket.

The Rajasthan Forest Department’s protected-area material current in 2026 lists five tiger reserves: Ranthambore, Sariska, Mukundara Hills, Ramgarh Vishdhari and Dholpur-Karauli. Ramgarh Vishdhari, centred on Bundi, was notified in 2022. These newer reserves do not automatically have the same visitor machinery as Ranthambore. Recheck the department page before an exam answer or a booking. This paragraph is a reading note, not a frozen gazette.

Desert National Park, in Jaisalmer and Barmer, matters for arid wildlife including the Great Indian Bustard, the godawan. It is not a tiger reserve and not a dune camp. A hotel “safari” may mean a jeep to a sand ridge. Ask which protected area and which permit. National Chambal Sanctuary is the river, the gharial and the ravines. Mount Abu, Kumbhalgarh and Sitamata are other landscapes again.

Zones close in the monsoon and for management reasons. Stay in the vehicle when told. Do not treat a tiger photograph as a right. This site will help you count days. It will not sell a permit or promise an animal.
